The Environment Agency (EA) are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic Technical Specialist with knowledge of using Remote Sensing and Earth Observation (RE/EO) systems (drone, air and satellite) in a regulatory context.
You will be part of a team who are delivering a project in their application to the impacts of agriculture and the development of a compliance models for the Environment Agency’s compliance programme. The project will not only look at the use of the platforms but also the translation of them into operational systems for deployment in day-to-day compliance activity.
You will be working within a small project team which is both using these systems but also building operational capability for our area agriculture teams to use in their compliance roles.

Key elements of the role will include:

  • Working with colleagues to understanding how innovative technologies like Artificial intelligence and deep learning models for object detection may help deliver our environmental objectives.
  • Working with the team to develop and support in building new hypothesis for the application of these technologies in an agricultural setting (eg. Agricultural Emissions using Satellite data).
  • Assisting in the deployment of proven methodologies into products in the form of GIS layers (under minimal supervision/independently) for operational teams and providing training and support as required.
  • Report writing for both internal and external audiences.

The team
The Agriculture and Land team sits within the national Environment &Business Nature and Place function of the EA. We steer the direction, set the priorities and shape our organisation’s approach to delivering environmental outcomes and better regulation.
We work closely with colleagues across the EA, with Government, delivery partners and customers, and the agricultural and food and drink sector to help create a better place for people and wildlife and demonstrate value for money.
Experience/skills required
This is a technical officer role in a small specialist team.
You will be familiar with the use of these technologies and could innovate and develop new solutions, whilst working as part of a dedicated team. Where necessary you will provide support to the team to deliver joint objectives.
A good knowledge of Remote Sensing and Earth observation and Artificial Intelligence modelling approaches as well as agriculture regulation or their use in other compliance environments.
Experience of working in projects and developing innovative solutions.
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
Contact and additional information
You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll support you to find an incident role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given.
You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible.
We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnights may be required.
Please read the Candidate / Additional Information Pack. Contact rushanka.amrutkar@environment-agency.gov.uk or simon.barron@environment-agency.gov.uk
Applications are “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions.
Interviews will be held via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date.
If you consent to being held on a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and may offer you an alternative post.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with colleagues to understanding how innovative technologies like Artificial intelligence and deep learning models for object detection may help deliver our environmental objectives.
