Description:

We are recruiting a Research and Development Engineer – Drivetrain and Turbine Structure who will be a key member of the relevant knowledge area within our business. The role will lead development of innovative turbine substructure and mechanical sub-system for next generation offshore wind turbines as well as improve the development process, including the evaluation method for the developed substructure. The role will bring the relevant expertise to improve the mechanical structures - including floating substructure and its mooring system for large offshore wind turbine with optimized development process. The role will lead the development and integration of innovative technology in existing and future wind turbine concepts.

Responsibilities:

What will I do?

  • Act as the key offshore floating structure analysis engineer within the ‘Drive Train Knowledge Area’ of ORE CATAPULT’s business. This area concerns the mechanical structure of renewable energy.
  • Conduct Research & Development activities, consultancy and project work within ORE CATAPULT
  • Actively promote ORE CATAPULT’s brand and market presence by writing and delivering technical papers.
  • Contribute to the formulation of National and European Research & Development projects
  • Technical leadership of consultancy projects
  • Ensure the technical and scientific quality of the deliverables related to the Structural engineering.
  • Engage with customers and support commercial activities
  • Design or provide expert knowledge in the design of offshore renewable energy structures
  • Support and/or lead research and development programs related to mechanical structures
  • Ensure the delivery of research is in accordance with ORE Catapult policies and procedures.
  • Support Senior Engineering specialists to further develop the structural engineering capability within ORE Catapult
  • Support the concept phase of nominated projects and programmes to ensure that cost, schedule and deliverables are if full compliance with the key performance indicators agreed with line manager

What are we looking for?

Someone with:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • More than 2 years of experience in structural engineering with CAD, FEA and multibody dynamics
  • A PhD in a relevant subject area would be desirable.

What personal qualities do I need to have?

  • Proficient skills and experience in CAD and FEA for complex mechanical structure analysis
  • Experience in offshore wind turbine structure including floating substructure and mooring system
  • Experience in R&D programmes and/or commercial projects
  • Experience on technical product design and development in commercial and R&D spheres in compliance with relevant standards
  • Sound relationship management skills and confidence working with others at all levels.
  • Innovative and creative thinking.
  • Problem solving abilities – dealing with conflicting requirements.
  • Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed in overcoming obstacles.
  • High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.
