Responsibilities:
Are you seeking a PhD project at the interface between geoscience, machine learning and applied mathematics – with an application to the highly relevant problem of nuclear waste storage? Then a position in this project might be appealing to you:
Your responsibility will be to develop new strategies to link structural geological models to process simulations. This includes the investigation of suitable geometric representations for geological structures, the mesh generation step, as well as the subsequent simulation of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes. Depending on your own profile and interests, you can focus on specific aspects of this workflow, with support from experts in our own institute, as well as from the partner institutions in this project at GFZ Potsdam and TU Darmstadt. The position is further associated with the International Research training Group “Modern Inverse Problems” at RWTH Aachen und the Oden Institute at UT Austin, Texas, USA. For the position, an extended research stay at UT Austin is included.
We actively support the publication of the results of your scientific work in articles and at conferences. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to develop a teaching portfolio and to contribute to our Bachelor and Master degree programs through assisting in lectures and exercises, as well as overseeing the completion of final theses.
