Research Assistant/Associate in Resilient Networks (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on a project funded by Boeing Research and Technology on Resilient Communication Networks. The researcher will play a key role in developing techniques and algorithms to model the operation and dynamic behaviour of communication networks with an aim to develop optimal policies for improving network resilience.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. The researcher will be primarily based in the Asset Management Group and the Distributed Information and Automation Lab at the Institute for Manufacturing.
The researcher’s responsibilities will include: developing models of communication networks to understand their dynamic behaviour, detect and predict disruptions in network operations and develop techniques to improve network resilience against disruptions. The appointed researcher will be expected to build on the approach that has been developed in the project so far, and potentially bring new approaches to address the problem. In particular, the current approaches bring together techniques based on network science, graph signal processing and game theory. Familiarity and experience in these areas will be advantageous for the applicant. The researcher will engage with key stakeholders in Boeing on a regular basis. The appointed candidate must be comfortable with explaining their research in a practical and application-oriented manner. The researcher will be working with stakeholders in Boeing in defining the problem(s), identifying possible paths for solution development and developing decision-support tools. The researcher will be expected to produce high-quality publications for presentation at academic and industrial conferences in addition to the top journals in the field.
Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Engineering or relevant discipline.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966; Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
