Description:

A Research Assistant position is currently available in the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS).
The Climate Transformation Programme (CTP) aims to develop, inspire and accelerate knowledge-based solutions and educate future leaders to establish the stable climate and environment necessary for resilient, just, and sustainable Southeast Asian societies.
CTP will generate knowledge and innovation across disciplines including climate and Earth science, ecology, materials science, artificial intelligence, humanities, social sciences and the arts, finance, health, and engineering. It will also translate state-of-the-art scientific results into real world solutions for Singapore, and it will transfer these solutions to Southeast Asia (SEA) and beyond.
As part of this programme, Cluster 1 PI Jingyu Wang will decipher the interrelationships between the large-scale climate conditions and local extreme events.
The Research Assistant will be based in EOS and will contribute to the development and application of high-resolution models, incorporating physical-based or machine learning methods for climate change studies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Run and test numerical weather prediction models (e.g., MPAS, CESM-VR, E3SM-RRM, WRF, or UM) for atmospheric science and climate change studies
  • Incorporate physical-based or machine learning methods into the models
  • Analyze model output, perform statistical analysis and provide interpretation, visualization and insights
  • Provide scientific input and support to other ongoing projects
  • Publish scientific papers and present at relevant conferences

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Climatology, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field
  • Experience in numerical weather prediction models testing
  • Familiarization with physical-based or machine learning methods
  • Proficiency in Linux-based high-performance computing systems and multi-process programming
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, IDL or MATLAB
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Interested applicants are invited to submit a cover letter, full CV, research statement, and publication list in one document. Enquiries about this position can be made to Jinyu Wang.
