Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government’s Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Reporting to the Research Program Supervisor, the Research Assistant will complete research-related activities as assigned, as well as provide administrative and clerical support for ongoing research project(s) and/or organizational research program.
The incumbent will assist with record keeping, preparation of study materials and compliance documents, data collection activities, data analysis, and knowledge translation deliverables as required to complete the research project(s) being undertaken.

Data Collection and Analysis Support

  • Undertake data collection, extraction, and collation methods as required by research study protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Make suggestions to Program Supervisor and members of the research team(s) to support development and refinement of study protocols and tools as needed.
  • Collect, organize, verify and manage data from various sources.
  • Prepare results and findings summaries to the research team for consideration.

Research Administrative Support

  • Provide general administrative support to the research team and liaise with research partners as required
  • Assist the Research Program Supervisor and broader team in preparing compliance documents (e.g. Research Ethics Board application, amendments, privacy review)
  • Prepare and maintain study materials for use in research projects data (e.g., data collection/cleaning instructions, data dictionaries)
  • Assist with training and other activities related to data collection for research studies or data registries.
  • Handle other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge Translation Deliverable Preparation

  • Undertake literature reviews on relevant topics to assist in development of reports, articles, abstracts, and other knowledge-sharing documents.
  • Supply data visualizations, descriptions, and summaries for inclusion in research reports.
  • Assist in the development of research publications as assigned.

Educations and Experience
College-level diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience
required.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, internet.
  • Ability to recognize sensitive issues and respond appropriately.
  • Effective communication, problem-solving, and decision making skills.
  • Well-developed organizational, time management, and daily planning skills.
  • Experience with the pre-hospital healthcare environment, including equipment, information gathering, and platforms, e.g. ePCR, MFR documentation, CAD, Zoll are preferred.Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
