Description:

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are looking for a motivated undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in working as a part time research assistant on a field project in southern Manitoba this summer focusing on surveying plants in native prairies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants should be currently enrolled in a B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D biology (or related) program at a Manitoba university.
  • Experience in processing and identifying plant samples is an asset. Training will be implemented where needed to assist candidates perform the position duties.
  • The position requires successful candidates to work in a remote field setting with some laboratory work at the University of Winnipeg. Use of plant identification keys and identification software to assess field collected samples is required.
  • Students should be comfortable working in outdoor environments, be tolerant of biting flies and ticks, and be able to perform their duties with under various climate conditions (e.g. rain).
  • Previous field experience with plant surveys is a definite asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare equipment and plant materials for research.
  • Assist in monitoring and documenting research status and findings.
  • Assist in data collection and data entry.
  • Assistant graduate students in field work and plant surveys.
