Description:

Research Technician 3 to assist and support scientific investigation to study human cancer as directed in the Comprehensive Cancer Center under Frank Frissora.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist and provide support of research studies in cancer biology as directed in the experimental hematology lab
  • Conducts planned research activities using observation, measurement and analytical techniques
  • Prepares solutions and live culture media for scientific experiments
  • Performs a variety of assays and experimental tests
  • Collects, sorts and processes tissue and blood samples
  • Records and consolidates research data; performs routine experimental procedures on laboratory animals including surgical procedures and/or administration of drugs
  • Assists with care of laboratory animals
  • Assists with preparation of data and materials for inclusion in research reports, publications and grant applications written by principal investigator
  • Researches current scientific literature on specified topics
  • Assists with instructing research aides, undergraduate and graduate students in laboratory procedures and operation of equipment
  • Calibrates various laboratory equipment and operates microscopes, centrifuges and other laboratory equipment
  • Assists with ordering, stocking and maintenance of research supplies.
    Job duties:
    50% Assists and supports scientific investigation to study {can include type of research being investigated here} as directed; independently conducts assigned experiments; performs a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, assays, cell cultures and Northern and Western analysis; sorts and processes tissue and blood samples; tests and evaluates current procedures and provides feedback to research team; performs routine procedures on lab animals; maintains and oversees animal breeding colonies and/or transgenic mouse colonies; assists with care of lab animals; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities.
    30% Records, consolidates and assists with analysis of research results; assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals, manuscripts and professional presentations; prepares research progress reports; assists principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conducts library research on requested topics through researching current literature.
    10% Assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; sets up and operates laboratory equipment; monitors research supply, including specimens, inventory and initiates procurement requests as needed; other duties as assigned.
    10% Participates in lab maintenance, ordering of supplies, keep lab areas clean and participation in shared lab duties.
