About the Role The Research Assistant provides a range of laboratory, technical and administrative support that contributes to the efficient operation of the two contract research projects Investigating water quality impacts for sustainable management and optimal production of Blue Mussels and Implementing management measures to address the high incidence of Ciguatera poisoning from fish consumption for improved public health and fish export compliance outcomes in Kiribati funded by The Department of Regional NSW and The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research respectively. The Research Assistant will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support to the Seafood Safety Lab (for students and supervisors); dinoflagellate culture maintenance; maintenance of Seafood Safety Lab equipment and routine water quality monitoring fieldwork; and receiving and sending a variety of sample types under cold and frozen conditions. As the ideal candidate, you will possess:• Experience in molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, DNA purification)• Experience with algal culturing and experimental techniques (cell count, growth curve, creating growth media)• Experience with specimen reception and dispatch with knowledge of cryogenic handling practices. • Experience with aquatic fieldwork, including working on boats.• Ability to work independently, as well as within a group.• Data management and report writing skills
REMUNERATIONBase Salary Range: $80,044 to $91,570 pa (HEW 5) This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary. This position is full-time, and the appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
