Description:
People with MND have complex health and social care needs that are met through a range of services provided by a multidisciplinary team (MDT), with established links with other services such as clinical psychology, social care, respiratory ventilation services, orthotics and gastroenterology. Despite NICE highlighting the need for oral health management in terms of nutrition, gastrostomy and for those with saliva problems, the dental team are not indicated as being part of the MDT or associated services.
Oral health is a recognised component of quality of life; poor oral health can result in functional, aesthetic, nutritional and psychological problems. Oral health can usually be maintained through oral hygiene self-care and access to dental care services where treatment can be given if needed. The delivery of dental services and supporting oral hygiene behaviours have been widely researched for the general population and to some extent in certain specific populations. However, there is very little research on how best to support those living with MND to ensure their oral health needs are met.
The aim of this project is to: develop an understanding of the oral health needs of people with MND and how these needs are met within their broader health and social care provision; explore the experiences of people with MND with regard to their oral health and to identify barriers and facilitators for maintaining good oral health. A mixed methods approach will be undertaken, including:
A scoping review of the literature will be undertaken to identify the characteristics of oral health care services for those with MND, their oral health needs, the impact of poor oral health and barriers/enablers to maintaining good oral health for those with MND:
- Qualitative interview study will be carried out in order to explore the lived experience of MND with particular focus on oral health
- A national survey to further understand barriers and facilitators for maintaining good oral health
- The proposed work will be used to inform the development of an evidence-based, oral health care pathway and a self/carer-care tool-kit for those with MND.
The primary purpose of the Research Associate post is to support with the development and conduct of the qualitative interviews within this project, although input into the broader project will be expected.
