Description:
We wish to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic scientist to work on the ERC Starting Grant funded project ‘ESPEN: Examining the Shape of Proton-Emitting Nuclei’ led by Dr Kara Lynch. This research project aims to perform high-resolution laser spectroscopy on proton-emitting nuclei for the first time, utilising a variety of high-resolution laser spectroscopy techniques. The research activity is based at ISOLDE-CERN, FRIB and Manchester.
The successful candidate will lead the developments needed to study proton-rich nuclei using the Perpendicularly Illuminated Laser Ion Source Trap (PI-LIST) apparatus at ISOLDE-CERN. They will contribute to the development of resonance ionization spectroscopy schemes for the study of proton-rich nuclei, and assist with the planning, installation and development of an off-line laser scheme development setup at the University.
The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field of experimental nuclear physics. Knowledge of the operation and development of laser ion sources for the production of radioactive isotopes is essential. In addition, knowledge of in-source laser spectroscopy techniques with low-energy radioactive ion beams for atomic and nuclear physics studies is essential. Knowledge of tuneable laser systems used for resonance ionization spectroscopy, radiofrequency generation and delivery for ion sources and ion guides, and experience in improving the spectral resolution of laser ion sources is essential.
What you will get in return:
- Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
- Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
