Position Summary:
The Research Associate will work with the Research Supervisor in the ongoing development of an advanced electrical machine being developed under contract with General Dynamics. The work will take place in the Computational Electromagnetics Lab at McGill University. The Research Associate is responsible for the development work of the last 3 years and will work with the existing members of the team. This requires a familiarity with the work at General Dynamics and an advanced knowledge both of electrical machine design processes and the simulation software (Simcenter MAGNET) being used. The project is expected to last 6 months.

Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Continue the analysis and optimization of an electrical machine (currently covered by a Non-Disclosure Agreement) as agreed to in discussions with the Research Supervisor and the engineering team at General Dynamics.
  • Will be expected to run advanced electromagnetic simulations with Simcenter MAGNET and also develop muti-physics performance predictions including thermal and structural as well as contributing to the multi-objective and multi-physics optimization of the design.
  • Will be involved in detailed design documentation which may involve the use of the Siemens NX software.
  • Provides reports every two days on work done and progress achieved to the Research Supervisor.
  • Writes reports on the work done for submission to General Dynamics and, additionally, produces a presentation every 2 weeks for a joint team meeting.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in the area of novel electrical machine design and analysis, required
  • At least 5 years of research experience
