Description:

THE OPPORTUNITY:

This position will involve the design and development of a robotic platform for a set of promising clinical robotic applications. The position is full-time for 1 years, with possibility of extension for another year. Strong background in mechanical design, mechatronics, and system integration skills. The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary research group consist of clinicians, engineers, computer scientists, and physicists looking at fundamental advances in design, sensing, machine learning, planning and robot control. It is expected that the successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in engineering.
This position is part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary project between the Center for Inflammation Research and School of Informatics at University of Edinburgh. This project aims to develop robust, flexible, and safe surgical platform for use in lung interventions by making fundamental contributions in cognitive mechatronic technologies.
For this we need to make several fundamental contributions to existing mechatronic technologies, i.e., a combination of better machines, modular designs as well as a better sensing and awareness. The success of our project also relies on integrating these technologies into a user-intuitive framework, ultimately enabling robotic platform that can integrate seamlessly into existing clinical pathway without the need to fully re-engineer our environments for robot operation.
This role is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term (12 months).

YOUR SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS:

Essential:

  • PhD degree (or near completion) in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Background in robotics.
  • Background in Computer Vision.
  • Background in programming C/C++ or python, experience with ROS.
  • Proficient oral and written English skills.
  • In addition, candidates should have a track record of high-impact international publications and demonstrate enthusiasm for performing both theoretical and experimental research activities.

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in Linux, physics simulators (Gazebo), ROS1/ROS2.
  • Experience in application of foundation models in computer vision. Background in Soft/Flexible Robotics
