Research & Development Scientist, Biosciences
Supports and conducts research in utilizing bacteria and fungi as live microbe technologies for agriculture. As a member of the Research and Development team for Mosaic Biosciences, this role will develop and perform microbiology experiments and laboratory tasks to support ongoing projects in the laboratory, field, and/or production locations. Microbiology laboratory skills, excellent communication, and strong organizational skills are required.

What will you do?

  • Research and Development Support: Execute targeted studies to advance agricultural product candidates following experimental designs that have proper replication and controls to ensure meaningful and interpretable results. This work may occur in the laboratory, field, and/or at production locations.
  • Laboratory maintenance: Support the broader Research and Development team in the laboratory, field, and/or at production locations, including cleaning, organizing, and conducting a variety of different experimental tasks. Serve as a technical and hands-on laboratory support for the Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria product line and other live microbe technologies.
  • Interpretation and reporting out on data and project progress: Synthesize technical information in written and oral form to interpret the outcome of research and development studies. Interpretation of results and data generation using high quality, rigor, integrity, and compliance standards.

What do you need for this role?

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology, Industrial Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioprocess Engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years of industry or academia research experience.
  • Demonstrated abilities producing microbial cells (bacteria and fungi) using fermenters and related components.
  • Demonstrated ability in design, installation, and operation of bioreactors at lab and pilot scale.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and optimizing growth media for targeted microorganisms.
  • Demonstrated experience in downstream processing of prepared cell biomass (i.e spray drying).
  • Demonstrated abilities in microbiology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability in management of biobanks.
  • Hands on experience assembling and operating of new applications (i.e. bioreactors, spray dryers)
  • Knowledge of and training in good experimental design and basic statistics.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs; ability to sit, stand, or kneel as needed; ability to work outdoors, in the lab, in production environments, in greenhouses, and around plants, microbes, and soil.
  • Critical thinking and willingness to share your point of view.
  • Ability to translate and write research findings.
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Proactive, transparent, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Highly motivated, creative, and organized.
  • Ability to work across functions and lines in a matrix environment.
  • Strong analytical abilities for interpreting scientific results.
  • Experience working with data analysis programs preferred.
  • Computer proficiency including MS Office and web-based applications.
  • PowerBI, Microsoft PowerApps, SmartSheet experience preferred.
  • Willing/able to travel to within Canada and the United States.
