The Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), within the Group of Science, Engineering and Technology at KU Leuven, is looking for a research expert in the domain of protection of the future power system.
The research expert will be part of the ELECTA research group as part of EnergyVille and its newly found competence center HC3. The research expert will support the protection part of the research roadmap “Towards HVDC Grids” by acquiring relevant expertise in the fields of power system protection and HVDC. The research roadmap “Towards HVDC Grids” aims to develop algorithms and models to support developments in protection of the future power system.

Responsibilities

  • Developing innovative protection concepts, approaches and solutions for future power systems including HVDC grids.
  • Developing innovative approaches to analyze transients in future power systems.
  • Developing new approaches to design and test different HVDC protection equipment.
  • Proactively engaging in the formulation of protection provisions for future power system grid codes including HVDC.
  • Establishing your own research in the field of protection of future power systems, while fostering collaboration with fellow research experts, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students within the HC3 competence center
  • Guidance of Ph.D. students and follow-up of research projects.
  • Contributing to research project proposals, encompassing public, European (HORIZON Europe program) and industrial funding opportunities.
  • Disseminating research outcomes on a global scale by actively engaging in international conferences, seminars, and events.
  • Establishing connections within the industry to enhance the impact of research outcomes.
  • Active participation in international workgroups (CIGRE, IEEE, etc.)
  • (optional) Master’s level teaching.

Profiel

  • Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering with several years (minimum 3) post-doctoral research experience.
  • Expert in power system protection analysis and design of future power system components such as HVDC and HVDC grids.
  • Extensive experience in EMT simulation tools such as MATLAB-Simulink / PSCAD and real-time simulations, and a deep knowledge in frequency-domain transient analysis and modeling.
  • Extensive knowledge of protection requirements in existing grid codes.
  • Excellent networking and presentation skills.
  • Experience in managing research and industrial projects, and contributing to project proposals (HORIZON Europe, industrial, etc.).
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken, knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
