SUMMARY

The University of Michigan’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is hiring a postdoctoral fellow to support a project on monitoring, managing and failure assessment of water transmission pipes. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Sherif El-Tawil.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Strong mechanics background.
  • Field and lab experience with installation of sensors, especially piezoelectric sensors, acoustic sensors, strain sensors and wireless equipment.
  • Assessment and modeling of large data sets collected from continuous monitoring of pipeline segments.
  • Experience with machine learning and machine vision as applied to structural mechanics and big data applications.
  • Ability to work within a large multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities:

Research Fellow duties will predominantly involve working across a broad research portfolio, spanning real-time control, sensor networks, AI, and related topics along with a team of researchers and practitioners. Existing collaborations with community partners and utilities across the US will provide the opportunity to translate research ideas directly into practice. Responsibilities include:

  • conducting daily research according to the requirements of assigned projects;
  • drafting progress reports and reporting to funding agencies;
  • mentoring graduate students;
  • drafting journal papers and technical reports;
  • exploring beyond the scope of the project to create new ideas; and
  • managing assigned equipment and materials.
