For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).
A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).
A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

DUTIES

The Research Physician works primarily as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary civil aerospace medical risk analysis research group. This group has two goals: (1) serve as the focal point for new developments in the theory and practice of risk analysis within aerospace medicine based on a synthesis of a range of disciplines, and (2) develop and establish methodologies and associated data environments for ongoing risk evaluation and management across various civil aerospace medicine services and product lines.
Applies experience and advanced technical knowledge in research and aerospace and/or occupational medicine to accomplish assignments. Understands how their technical area interacts with or is affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the research sponsor when developing research projects addressing diverse, complex problems. Typical assignments include formulating hypotheses; developing and carrying out research plans; determining resource needs; keeping the supervisor informed of general plans and progress; addressing novel and difficult problems requiring modification of standard methods; analyzing and interpreting results; preparing comprehensive reports of findings; and working with research sponsors to interpret and implement research findings.
Contacts are internal and external to the agency. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities. Is primary author or contributes to the preparation of management/technical reports or contractual documents and may communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties. Work is expected to result in selection to serve on committees and review panels of technical groups and professional organizations; recognition by the scientific community as a significant contributor in aerospace and/or occupational medicine; and invitations to make presentations to professional societies and others outside the organization on technical matters; and consultations by agency technical and managerial staff and other researchers who are respected in their fields of study.
Uses or adapts guidelines consisting of literature in the fields of aerospace and occupational medicine; procedures; instructions; or precedents to meet the requirements of the current assignment. May need to deal with situations where the existing literature is of limited usefulness due to contradictions, critical gaps, or limited applicability, or is largely absent because of the novel nature of the work. Assignments typically require creative thinking in defining elusive or highly complex problems; developing productive hypotheses for testing; developing important new approaches, methods, and techniques; interpreting and relating significant results to other research findings; developing and applying new techniques and original methods of attack to solve problems presenting unprecedented or novel aspects; and adapting, extending, and synthesizing theory, principles, and techniques into original or innovative combinations. Provides recommendations for improving research and project management processes.
Provides guidance to lower-level technical staff on how to solve difficult technical issues. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management or a more experienced technical specialist. Identifies and informs management of problems that require their attention. Often develops and recommends techniques to address problem situations. Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion, for technical compliance and alignment with the requirements of the project or other work activity.
The Physician episodically performs forensic medical reviews of aeronaut toxicology, physiology and other medical records in support of aircraft incident and accident investigations.
