The Bureau of Meteorology’s Research Program is in search of a research scientist with a data/computational focus and a background in meteorology, earth sciences, or related fields. This individual will play a pivotal role in our innovative multi-disciplinary Forecast Improvement Team. This team is dedicated to the research and development of techniques aimed at enhancing and broadening the Bureau’s Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) post-processing. In doing so, the Forecast Improvement Team is pivotal in the ongoing evolution of the Bureau’s forecast services. This includes the advancement into probability-based, scenario-driven, multi-hazard, and impact-based forecasting, all with the aim of providing seamless and reliable guidance to bolster the capabilities of operational forecast staff.
The role emphasizes collaborative development, rigorous testing, and meticulous documentation of weather model ensemble post processing software and research. This encompasses areas like machine learning science, statistical modelling, and scientific software development. The position entails the development of innovative algorithms and software for high-impact weather forecasts, both deterministic and probabilistic, drawing insights from both domestic and international state-of-the-art research. The position will also play a role in the operationalisation of research through science testing, and the design and development of software libraries and suites. Experience in processing large datasets and proficiency in working with High Performance Computers would be extremely beneficial. Collaborative endeavours with meteorological services in the UK, Singapore, and USA will be an integral part of the role. Adherence to modern research software tools and practices such as git, rigorous testing, and code reviews are mandatory.
