INCUMBENTS IN ONE OF THESE CLASSIFICATIONS, WHERE A MASTER’S DEGREE IS REQUIRED TO MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SHALL RECEIVE AN EDUCATIONAL PAY DIFFERENTIAL EQUIVALENT TO 2% OF THEIR MONTHLY BASE PAY. THOSE WHERE A DOCTORAL DEGREE IS REQUIRED TO MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SHALL RECEIVE AN EDUCATIONAL PAY DIFFERENTIAL EQUIVALENT TO 3% OF THEIR MONTHLY BASE PAY. INDIVIDUALS WITH BOTH A MASTER’S AND DOCTORAL DEGREE WILL BE GIVEN THE BEST BENEFIT IN RELATION TO SALARY SHALL ONLY BE ELIGIBLE FOR ONLY ONE AMOUNT.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the research and implementation of laboratory safety practices.
The Research Scientist IV (RSIV) (Microbiological Sciences), acting as the Center Biosafety Officer, develops the Center for Laboratory Sciences biosafety, accident prevention and laboratory occupational health programs based on advanced research of infectious disease organism and toxic chemical handling best practices, public health guidance documents, academic research, and regulatory requirements. The RS IV coordinates a unified laboratory safety program for the Center for Laboratory Sciences, working closely with Laboratory Division Chiefs, Branch Chiefs, Research Scientist Supervisors, and other research scientists to apply advanced knowledge of biological safety and biosecurity; infectious disease prevention; hazardous waste management; risk assessment and risk management; containment, disinfection, and sterilization of hazardous materials; and environmental control.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor II, Operations Branch, Laboratory Operations Section Chief.
