Who are we?
We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) - the UK’s leading institution for integrated coastal and deep ocean research. Through our ground-breaking research, collaboration, and game-changing innovation we work to gain a deeper understanding of our ocean, helping every living thing on our planet flourish.
We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community focused on solving challenging long-term marine science problems, underpinning international and UK public policy, business and societal outcomes.
The ocean has the potential to provide the solutions to so many of the social, economic and environmental challenges we face worldwide. To truly harness the value of the ocean, we put ocean research, science and discovery at the heart of our culture.
Join us in shaping the future of oceanographic research and contribute your unique perspective to our organisation.
About the role
This role offers the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most advanced ocean and climate models. The successful candidate will join the vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC, where initially they will play an important role in the exciting, multi-institute National Capability programme AtlantiS, which focuses on North Atlantic research. Tasks will include developing, evaluating and running advanced numerical models, including ocean, atmosphere and sea-ice components, and analysing output from these and other model simulations in conjunction with data from NOC’s state-of-the-art observational programmes such as the RAPID and OSNAP monitoring arrays. They will perform research on (i) understanding recent changes in the state of the ocean (ii) investigating how the ocean will be impacted by future climate change and (iii) how the atmospheric circulation reacts to changes in the state of the ocean.
About you
You will have a PhD in a numerate science discipline, mathematics, computing or engineering, strong mathematical and computing skills, with expertise in data analysis and experience of programming in Linux environments, and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Some prior knowledge of oceanography and/or meteorology would be desirable. The ideal person for this job will be interested in learning the technical details of running and analysing advanced numerical models as well as taking on the scientific challenge of understanding ongoing changes and predicting future changes in the oceans and the climate system. You would be expected to collaborate broadly, both internally at NOC and nationally and internationally. You will have a track record in scientific research publication appropriate to your career stage and will be an organised and methodical team player who thrives in collective endeavour.
