Description:

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Specialist II within the Huganir Lab to study the role of AMPA receptor dynamics in learning and memory. The Research Specialist II will work collaboratively with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and independently conduct experiments. They will perform 2-photon and confocal microscopy, immunohistochemistry, cranial window and injection surgeries, behavioral testing, and histology. The position involves developing and troubleshooting new protocols and experiments, based on review of current literature and previous research experience. The Specialist will also be expected to perform routine data analysis, organize results, and present findings to the larger research group. The position requires substantial work with mice, including breeding, genotyping, and colony management, in addition to carrying out weeks-long experiments involving surgical procedures and behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Two (2) years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master’s degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in rodent behavior, animal husbandry, microscopy (e.g., 2-photon, confocal), immunohistochemistry, histology, and molecular biology and biochemistry techniques.

    Starting Salary Range: $40,900 - $71,600 Annually ($56,250 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Responsibilities:

  • Make scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Apply published methods to current experimental work, in collaboration with students and Principal Investigators (PI’s)
  • Maintain detailed working knowledge of all assigned protocols.
  • Collaborate with lab members in development of new techniques and instruments.
  • Assist with the maintenance of mouse colonies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of lab goals and objectives.
  • Analyze data for scientific publications.
  • Work on imaging AMPA receptors in mice during learning and memory.
