Description:
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.
With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.
JOB SUMMARY
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Conducts experiments according to established protocols or under the guidance of a researcher. This may involve preparing reagents, setting up equipment, and executing experiments accurately and efficiently.
- Collects data from experiments, recording observations, and organizing data in a systematic manner. This may also involve basic statistical analysis or data visualization using software tools like Excel, SPSS, or Python.
- Assists in the maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. This may also involve inventory management, ordering supplies, and ensuring the lab is clean and organized.
- Maintains detailed records of experimental procedures, results, and observations. This includes documenting any deviations from protocols and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Collaborates with other members of the research team, including scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and other technicians. This may involve participating in lab meetings, discussing experimental designs, and sharing findings.
- Adheres to safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment. This includes proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, as well as following institutional guidelines for research conduct.
- Troubleshoots experimental procedures and equipment issues as they arise. This requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and address problems effectively.
- Provides guidance and training to junior technicians or new members of the research team. This may involve demonstrating techniques, explaining protocols, and offering support as needed.
General Responsibilities
- Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
- Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments.
- Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed.
- Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
