Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

The Baker Lab in Biological Sciences at NC State seeks a Research Technician as early as August 2024. This is a great opportunity to help build a new lab and spearhead projects in systems/behavioral neuroscience. Research in the Baker lab centers on the neural basis of hearing and the evolution of auditory systems. We use cutting-edge tools such as in vivo neural imaging, genetic tool building, connectomics, and behavior in Drosophila species to uncover how flies detect sounds.

As an integral member of the research team, the Research Technician will perform duties in support of neuroscience research studies including but not limited to:

  • fly husbandry: maintaining fly stocks and managing crosses
  • purchasing and lab organization: tracking consumable usage to maintain adequate levels
  • maintaining laboratory protocols: writing, revising, implementing, and teaching lab protocols
  • building behavior rigs
  • performing experiments such as animal behavior and related data analysis
  • administrative tasks

Most importantly, the Research Technician will be scientifically curious, an excellent problem solver with the ability to learn complex tasks effectively, organized and and a careful record keeper, and able to interact positively with all levels of staff. Ideally, the Research Technician will have some familiarity with Drosophila. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who is considering applying to graduate school in neuroscience or related fields.
