Description:

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist to work under the supervision of a laboratory manager and will be responsible for independently performing a range of analyses and tests on human fluids, water and soil samples and/or isolated nucleic acids. In addition, this role will involve data analysis, data reporting and communication with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (JHSOM) faculty in a busy core facility. This position will be a lab-based role and will have daily interactions with other members of the lab and JHSOM customers (faculty, staff, students and postdocs). The work requires basic knowledge of molecular biology techniques, use of scientific methods, procedures, techniques gained through previous training and experience, the ability to apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and identify situations needing special attention.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Follows established standard operating procedures or protocols and utilizes appropriate technique to perform molecular biology tests and/or experiments.
  • Will be expected to function in an independent manner and participate in establishing new techniques/assays in the lab.
  • Responsible for daily wet lab experiments and result reporting.
  • Will operate standard and specialized equipment dedicated to laboratory services including, but not limited to: Perkin Elmer MSM I, QIAcube, MycoDtect scanner, Advanced Analytical Fragment Analyzer, TaqMan 7900, Integra Viaflo 96, centrifuges, pH meter, analytical balance, pipettes, spectrophotometer, fluorometer, electrophoresis equipment, digital photography equipment, and DNA thermal cyclers.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting experiments and will be encouraged to consult various resources for optimization, including the laboratory manager.
  • Customer interface and receipt QC with customers dropping off specimens for processing in the core facility.
  • Perform regular nucleic acid isolations, next generation sequencing library preparations, mycoplasma testing, quality tracking, PCR and other routine molecular biology techniques.
  • Perform high quality sample management to include database entry, cataloging of samples, fulfilling requests for preparation and shipment of samples stored at our facility, and organization and preparation of DNA for 96-well plating projects.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
  • Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents.
  • Will be expected to work as a team on projects, seeing them successfully through to completion.
  • Assist in general maintenance of the laboratory and associated document tracking to support quality assurance.
  • Will cross-train in other divisions and within the same laboratory, and perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
