ABOUT US

Surface Science Western (SSW) is a research and consulting laboratory specializing in the analysis and characterization of surfaces and materials. The unit functions as a self-sustaining business unit and utilizes a large array of precision instrumentation to provide support to industry and academic researchers. SSW works with 150-200 companies across North America per year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in a related academic research environment (may be from experience obtained during academic studies)
  • Experience operating and interpreting data from FTIR, optical microscopes, and SEM/EDX
  • Experience in sample preparation and FTIR analysis of microplastics is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the analytical capabilities available at Surface Science Western, including FTIR, optical microscopes, and SEM/EDX techniques
  • Familiarity with best approaches for research methodologies and analyses, including microplastics analysis methodologies
  • In-depth knowledge of research experimental design and analysis
  • Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one’s own unit
  • Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and with an ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
  • Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the research group’s events and activities
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced skills in software and other applications used to produce, support and analyze research outcomes
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to adhere to legislated safety requirements and Western safety policies
  • Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred

Responsibilities:

The Research Technologist will apply their advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform a variety of extremely complex procedures and experiments, and to support research functions within Surface Science Western. The role will assist in areas of research including analysis of microplastics, polymeric materials, and coatings as required. The Research Technologist will be responsible for providing guidance regarding the development, execution and analysis of research, and assist with the achievement of the desired innovative outcomes associated with the research. The Research Technologist will be responsible for operating and maintaining complex equipment, providing training and hands-on technical expertise to students, enforce laboratory protocols, and provide related expertise to ensure timely research and project outcomes are achieved.
