To continue the growth of our Northeast Infrastructure + Mobility team, we’re seeking a Resident Engineer (RE) to play a key role in providing and managing construction inspection services for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

JOB SUMMARY

With limited supervision, the RE will lead the team observing, monitoring, and recording construction contract work daily for compliance with the MBTA’s safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives, as defined in the construction contract documents. As part of their leadership responsibilities, the RE will pro-actively address field issues that are elevated from the inspection team for resolution in a timely manner. The RE will review daily field reports recording the construction activities, manpower, equipment, materials, and quality and safety issues; and review and process contractor payment requisitions via the MBTA’s Enterprise e-Builder system. The RE will also coordinate third party field inspection activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years’ experience in heavy civil construction, transit, or railroad. High School Diploma/GED or equivalent with 10+ years’ experience will be considered in lieu of education.
  • Ability to read and understand contract documents.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write technical field reports.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with electronic file management systems; e-Builder or similar
  • Experience with rail & transit mainline, yards and structures a plus.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • A personal vehicle may be needed to visit construction sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of construction field inspectors.
  • Oversee project work in accordance with the MBTA Resident Engineer’s Manual and other related MBTA guidance documents.
  • Review field inspection reports detailing inspection of construction work, verification of construction activities for conformance with project plans and specifications, and investigation of non-conforming work.
  • Process submittals, requests for information (RFIs), non-conformance reports (NCRs) and other documents via the MBTA’s Enterprise e-Builder system.
  • Schedule 3rd party inspection/testing of contractor installed elements for the project.
  • Check construction records vs. construction progress to identify project schedules and cost issues, provide recommendations as needed.
  • Coordinate with MBTA departments as required, or as requested by the MBTA Project Manager (PM).
  • Conduct regular safety inspections.
  • Notify the Contractor of deviations from plans and specifications.
  • Assist with PM with change order negotiations.
  • Verify Contractor has obtained permits necessary for timely execution of the work.
  • Review material testing results for conformance with the contract documents.
  • Confer with contractor representatives, state and other officials concerning construction work.
  • Complete project close-out activities.
