In this role, the successful candidate will report to the Manager, Market Risk Gas & Power and will work within a highly motivated and professional team responsible for overseeing the day-to-day commodity trading activities of the Supply and Trading function. The successful candidate will sit on the trading floor, and will experience the fast paced, exciting environment where multi-million-dollar energy contracts are bought and sold on the markets each day.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Four years of experience working in a trading environment (Front or Mid Office position) so that market risk exposures, physical commodity processes and fair value concepts are well understood
  • Bachelor Degree in Commerce, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (complex formulae, macros)
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, VBA, Microsoft Power suite of products (Power BI, Power Apps)
  • Understanding of Industry leading practices in risk governance process and procedures
  • Proficient with analyzing complex sets of data, and problem solve independently
  • Highly collaborative with superior networking skills, seasoned judgment, broad business and operational understanding
  • Self-starter with ability to influence, persuade and facilitate change
  • Risk Management experience in the areas of natural gas or power

Responsibilities:

  • Produce, analyze and explain daily profit & loss and exposures for natural gas and power positions on daily basis
  • Validate forward price curves and pricing analysis, ensuring data integrity and accuracy
  • Work in collaboration with other functions to ensure the Commodity Trading and Risk Management (CTRM) system is properly recording and valuing transactional activities
  • Develop strong knowledge of the CTRM and act as Mid Office subject matter expert (SME) maintaining up-to-date documentation on critical procedures
  • Focus on process improvements, streamlining the existing processes and crafting robust new ones
  • Work with the front office and risk control ensuring compliance to the risk policies, striving to reduce non-compliance events and ensuring transactions are entered accurately
  • Recognize and communicate issues arising from trading operations
  • Recommend and implement solutions to address issues identified
  • Provide ad-hoc analytical support to the front office, back office and risk control teams
  • Provide input into the new business proposals to ensure compliance to Risk Management Standard and respective policies and procedures

Location and other Key Details:

  • This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • The Gas & Power Risk group follows a U.S. based holiday calendar
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
