JOB SUMMARY

Navy Finance supports all of the Royal Navy’s activities, from front-line operations to personnel support and training; finance and governance; safety; equipment acquisition; programmes and planning; and Defence Engagement.
The Finance Manager supporting Military Operations is a critical role which provides key support to the Operations Finance Business Partner who acts as a Strategic Financial Advisor to the Budget Holders managing Military Operations. You will be charged with delivering accurate, timely and considered Financial information which will be used by stakeholders in Navy Command, Defence and ultimately HM Treasury.
We are looking for someone who is committed to providing an excellent finance service, focusing on in-year management of the Reserve budget delegated to the Navy, including costing and scrutinising qualifying expenditure, forecasting and providing challenge across the Navy’s business. The role will also require collaboration skills to ensure the financial cost and financial consequence of proposed military operations are understood by decision makers.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities are varied but will include:
Building detailed knowledge of Royal Navy and/or Partner Organisation Military Operations for which they are responsible, understanding the financial and performance drivers, risks, opportunities and issues.
Building relationships with Finance Business Partners in Navy and PJHQ, the wider Finance function and stakeholders across the Navy and wider Defence.
Working with team colleagues to support financial exercises such as Operations Annual Planning Cycles and Reviews.
Supporting teams across finance and the department to produce robust financial reserve forecasts, including the planning and co-ordination of the monthly forecasting process and inputting into the financial narrative.
Providing advice and challenge to military plans officers and budget holders.
Reviewing detailed financial schedules for interim and year end accounts.
Undertake month end activities, including preparation of material journals where necessary, reconciliations of forecasts and actuals and produce high quality reports and insightful management information.
Ensuring that internal control and governance procedures are understood and followed as the first line of defence for financial management.
Collaborating across Finance to strive for continuous improvement in systems reporting and analysis for quality information that provides maximum insight to stakeholders.
More generally, the post holder will be required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post. This may also include working closely with other Finance staff to develop solutions/problem-solve, engaging in project work to drive finance improvements.
A 12-month reserve list will be held for this vacancy, with the potential for other equivalent roles to be filled at a later date.
