Have completed the leaving Certificate
Have completed FTEAC level 5 in Healthcare Support
Have a clean B driving licence
SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND KNOWLEDGE
1.General Accountability
The person chosen will:
- Maintain throughout Peamount awareness of the privacy and dignity of the resident in relation to all our activities.
- Ensure the provision of a high standard of care to the resident and families is consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Peamount Healthcare.
- Ensure that they care that they provide reflect HIQA standards and best practice.
- Report to Clinical Nurse Managers/Person in charge and/or persons designated by him/her.
- Will attend training on the safe administration of medication if required to do so to meet the changing needs of the service.
- Will adhere to Peamount Healthcare policies at all times in the delivery of care.
- Be familiar with the vulnerability of residents and have knowledge of the policy on the protection of vulnerable adults.
- Activities
- Promote meaningful engagement with the residents
- Assist in the assessment and planning of activities for each individual resident.
- In consultation with the resident and key workers identify the priority outcomes from activities.
- Record all engagement in meaningful activities.
- Organise activities both on and offsite.
- Be familiar with the meaningful activities policy and feedback to members of the MDT when policy is being reviewed.
- Encourage and assist residents with activities that provide socialisation, mental and physical stimulation.
- Be willing to take part in any training that is deemed necessary to enhance the role.
- Be willing to organise afternoon teas and other social activities that include both residents and their relatives.
- Nutrition
Ensure residents dietary needs are adhered to, including special diets or supplementary drinks under the direction of the nursing staff when taking part in activities
Prepare and serve food/drinks outside of normal catering hours and collect crockery etc. where necessary. Assist residents to complete menu cards where necessary. - Mobilisation
Assist to move and position residents.
Assist the resident with walking and limb exercises as directed.
Assist with turning and re-positioning residents. Ensure the resident is comfortable in beds and on chairs.
Push Residents in wheelchairs and assist into Transport vehicles.
Clamping of wheelchairs.
5.Communication
- Report any complaint of pain, distress expressed by residents.
- Ensure that resident’s right to choice is respected.
- Answer telephones, locate appropriate personnel and direct enquires concerning resident’s condition to nursing staff.
- Receive and direct visitors within the ward.
- Assist residents to make telephone calls.
- Answer call bells and report resident requests to nursing staff. Ensure that bells are in working order and are within the reach of the resident.
- Excellent communication skills required.
- Communicate with residents in a respectful and sensitive manner.
6 Other Responsibilities
- Be familiar, comply with the Hospital policies in relation to Health and Safety, Fire Safety, major disaster, infection control, waste disposal including disposal of soiled linen, smoking policy and resident charter.
- Ensure that you are up to date with all Mandatory training.
- Report all incidents involving self, residents or visitors to Manager or Staff Nurse in charge.
- Assist with emergency first aid as directed.
- Attend in-service instruction as required.
- The ability to use own initiative.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO THE POST
