JOB SYNOPSIS
Sam’s Place is seeking a mature, responsible, dynamic individual who is interested in assisting with operational tasks necessary to the running of our coffeeshop. This is a 12-week, term position.
Sam’s Place Coffee is a coffeeshop and general store located at 140 Bannatyne Avenue. Sam’s Place is a Social Enterprise that is owned by Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. It runs a Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program that provides opportunity for young people, often facing barriers, to develop employable skills and gain experience for their future in the work force. We serve specialty espresso beverages, and baking. Sam’s Place also sells a variety of Canadian local and Fairtrade retail products.
The Operations Assistant (OA) would provide quality support to the Sam’s Place Manager in a variety of operational activities. Tasks will mostly include special projects, likely utilizing digital tools. Improving the POS system, website development, file organization, and retail inventory management will be the four dominant tasks assigned to the Operations Assistant. The successful candidate will also be fully trained in the day-to-day tasks of running the café, in all areas, which could include supervising and/or training staff or participants in all areas.
The Sam’s Place Operations Assistant will be required to work 30-hours a week Monday to Saturday. They will typically work 8am to 4pm but may work earlier hours on occasion, if opening the coffeeshop.

This position is only available to individuals aged 15 to 30, who are legally entitled to work in Canada, and have a valid Social Insurance Number. This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and is dependent on Sam’s Place receiving said funds.
Qualifications:
- Must be between 15 and 30 years of age.
- Must be available 30 hours a week between Monday to Saturday until end of contract.
- Demonstrated capacity to take initiative and complete projects independently.
- Attention to detail, willingness to go the extra mile, and superior organizational skills.
- Ability to manage inventory in an efficient manner.
- Strong problem solving and counting skills.
- Customer service experience in either the food service or retail industries.
- Experience working in a team dynamic with a variety of different personalities/working styles.
- Experience using a website development tool an asset.
- Experience working with databases and POS systems an asset.
- Supervisory or team leadership experience an asset.
- Experience working in a volunteer team an asset.
Responsibilities:
- Support the Sam’s Place Manager with operational tasks.
- Troubleshoot and improve POS equipment and system.
- Organize, catalogue, and showcase retail items in the physical space and the eCommerce platform, this includes developing the online inventory database with Squareup POS system.
- Manage website ordering system.
- Help prepare and scan files for organization and storage.
- Build and maintain relationships with makers, wholesalers, and buyers.
- Provide support for branding project where necessary.
- Assist with expanding social media marketing channels and presence where necessary.
- Assist with events, planning, and promotion where necessary.
- Assist with supervising the café floor and performing supervisor duties where necessary.
- Lead and teach staff and program participants where necessary.
- Provide support to the shop where necessary
