Queensland Health employs a range of oral health staff to deliver oral health care to eligible patients. The composition of teams may vary between clinics. Teams generally consist of the following staff: Dentists, Dental Specialists, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Therapists, Dental Prosthetists, Dental Technicians, Clinical Assistants and Administration Officers.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

  • It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: as required by HR Policy B1 [measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough), [hepatitis B], [tuberculosis].

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Working as part of the dental team, the trainee Dental Assistant will observe and learn to provide efficient, high quality dental assistance to eligible patients and instrument reprocessing services within Oral Health facilities across Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services (GCHHS).
Reporting to the Dental Assistant-Clinical Lead, the role will ensure compliance with Infection Control Standard Operating Procedures, Australian National Council on Health Care Standards Standard 3 during the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization procedures for instrument reprocessing.
This role will learn knowledge of relevant dental terminology, equipment, instruments, materials, medicaments and procedures; the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-skilled team; and dev interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.

KEY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Fulfill the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Public Service, the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) values.
  • Comply with the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service and all policies and procedures.
  • Comply with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the Gold Coast Health Clinical Governance Framework in all areas of your practice.
  • Observe and learn to provide efficient chair side assistance to the dentists, dental specialists, dental prosthetists, oral health therapists and dental therapists as part of daily duties.
  • Observe and learn to ensure Patient Safety 5 Step Protocol Checklist is completed, and Operational Health and Safety guidelines are strictly maintained, adhered to and accurately recorded.
  • Sterilisation of dental instruments and equipment including hand pieces, burs and other specialised equipment
  • Complete daily and weekly cleaning, maintenance and testing of equipment according to strict surgery guidelines.
  • Undertake general administrative duties including but not limited to:
  • Computer data input
  • Answering the telephone and greeting patients
  • Observe and learn to organise correct set up of medical equipment and medicaments for allocated dental surgeries according to strict surgery guidelines.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning correctly, reporting faulty equipment to the Senior Dental Assistant and all appropriate materials are available.
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with consumers, staff and other stakeholders as part of the treating team.
  • Follow policies, procedures and instructions relating to work health and safety that are relevant to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality and safe services in the workplace.
  • Take reasonable care for your own health, safety and wellbeing and take reasonable care to ensure that your acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health, safety and wellbeing of others.
  • Comply with reasonable instructions that are provided for the safety of you and others at the workplace.
