Description:

Apply independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens using electron microscopy leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate. While predominantly based within the Electron Microscopy Unit, the successful applicant would have a high level of histology experience and be able to assist in other areas of the Histology Service as required.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated ability in a range of histological applications including tasks such as embedding, specimen dissection, microtomy, routine special stains and advanced complex special stains, frozen sections, specimen dissection, immunohistochemistry and neuropathology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and skill in the delivery of scientific judgement within Electron Microscopy or the ability to rapidly acquire these skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in a single-discipline and multidisciplinary team such as Electron Microscopy as well as also contribute to the broader Anatomical Pathology service at Central laboratory.
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment to achieve the goals of the work unit including the meeting of critical deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of independent decision-making regarding workflow management and in the provision of clinical advice within the scope of the role.
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail, multitasking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation / certification.
  • Proven willingness and ability to actively participate in and contribute to continuing education and other professional development activities.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a relevant tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in science from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
  • While experience within the subdiscipline of Electron Microscopy will be highly regarded, applicants with a strong histology background with an interest in EM are encouraged to apply.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
