Job description:
GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.
Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations.
Provided formal approval of funding, the research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of the research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a position asScientist (m/f/d) Marine biogeochemical Modelling
starting on August 1st, 2024 or soon thereafter, for a 3-year period until July 31st, 2027.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position is part of the project RETAKE (CO2 Removal through Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement: Potential, Benefits and Risks), an interdisciplinary consortium of the CDRmare Research Mission of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM). The researcher will investigate the efficiency and durability of CO2 removal (CDR) from the atmosphere via ocean alkalinity enhancement using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. Updating the model by adding a benthic carbonate module and descriptions of benthic and pelagic calcifiers, and subsequently calibrating it against observational information will be part of the work. Different strategies of alkalinity enhancement will be simulated (equilibrated and non-equilibrated with the atmospheric, different regions, seasons and climate change scenarios). The fate of the added alkalinity as well as biogeochemical and possible ecological impacts will be investigated on timescales up to tens of millennia, and uncertainties with respect to model parameters and forcing will be estimated with large perturbed-parameter ensembles. The aim of the project is to inform other scientific disciplines within CDRmare, and also society and policymakers with robust scientific information about the efficiency, durability and risks of carbon dioxide removal via ocean alkalinity enhancement.
The successful candidate will collaborate with other scientists of the Marine Biogeochemical Modelling research unit, of the multi-institutional RETAKE consortium, and the wider CDRmare research mission. The research unit offers a vibrant research environment with scientists working on a wide range of research questions, including the understanding of global change impacts, the assessment of climate-change mitigation approaches, dynamics of deoxygenation, the interface of ecology and biogeochemistry, and applications of data assimilation, machine-learning and uncertainty-analysis methods.

QUALIFICATION

We are looking for a creative and committed scientist with a MSc degree in a natural sciences subject, a strong interest in the global carbon cycle and marine biogeochemistry, and demonstrated experience with biogeochemical ocean or Earth system modelling. Experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary and diverse team would be helpful. The working language of the group is English and good communication and writing skills are essential.
