ABOUT US
Western Technology Services (WTS) is a central source committed to providing high quality, cost-effective technology solutions and services to the campus community in support of the teaching and research missions of the University. WTS works collaboratively with other IT groups within Western’s faculties and support units to leverage central supported technology solutions and services where it makes sense. The Information Security Team is a small unit within WTS that is focused on safeguarding the University’s information assets and digital identities with respect to issues of confidentiality, integrity, availability, and risk management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- University Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
- Or equivalent combination of education and workplace experience and certifications
Preferred:
- University Degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Software Development, Software Engineering, etc.)
- Certification/Training in Cyber Security (SANS, CERT, CISSP)
Experience:
- 3 years’ experience in technical system or network administration
- Specific experience with script development
Preferred:
- Hands on experience with Linux/Unix system administration (eg. Linux command line manipulation)
- Exposure to common ‘hacking tools’ and technologies (eg. Metasploit)
- Familiarity with network protocols
- Familiarity with Operating Systems and host systems
Familiarity with vulnerability reporting tools and technologies (eg. Nessus)Familiarity with Security Information and Events Management (SIEM)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Capacity and interest in keeping up to date with information security trends
- Strong technical trouble shooting skills
- Ability to work independently and creatively to solve technical problems
- A well-defined sense of tact, sensitivity, and diplomacy particularly when dealing with confidential matters that may arise from security incident and other forensic investigations
- Ability to resolve problems and escalate issues with suggestions for further investigation and options for consideration as required.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager of Information Security, the Security Analyst is responsible for the detection, identification and response to cyber security incidents. The role will be responsible for a wide range of technologies including intrusion detection systems, vulnerability management tools and SIEM (Security Incident Event Management) tools to ensure the availability, integrity and confidentiality of University data and technical resources. The Security Analyst will have a broad understanding of network, server and workstation security concepts and be able to communicate them effectively to a wide variety of audiences. The role will provide input and assistance to the team on campus wide initiatives and provide security subject matter expertise to all faculties, departments, affiliates and administrative units at Western.
