JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction, responsible for monitoring all areas of MGH in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and employees. Monitors parking facilities, and pedestrian and vehicular traffic in accordance with department and hospital policy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Familiar with hospital environment and previous experience as Security Officer is preferred. Ability to comprehend and fulfill requirements related to safety regulations, security procedures, and hospital/department policies and procedures acquired through on-the-job training. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs.

Responsibilities:

Ensuring Safety and Security Patrols hospital properties. Observes the movements of persons in and about the facilities. Detects, investigates and reports incidents and discrepancies, verbally and/or through the appropriate reporting format. Always offers assistance when seeing someone in need. Locks/unlocks doors/alarms to provide appropriate access control for staff and visitors throughout the campus. Provides timely response to all service calls for Security. Enforces applicable laws and Security/Safety- related hospital policies. Inspects all life-safety equipment, including but not limited to, lights, fire extinguishers, exit signs, etc., correcting and/or submitting a completed work order by the end of the assigned shift when discrepancies are discovered. Completes safety Inspections, and submits findings in a neat, timely and accurate manner. Maintains records, reports and files as required. Investigates reports of theft, vandalism and accidents immediately upon notification of such an event. Documents all incidents according to established procedures. Documents, follows up with, and reports conclusions of any investigation to Supervisory staff in an appropriate and timely manner. Effectively generates reports. Constructively participates in emergency management drills. Displays ability to coordinate and evaluate a fire drill. Monitors parking lots, loading areas, restricted/reserved parking spaces, and vehicular and pedestrian traffic in and around the hospital facilities via foot, auto, bicycle, and/or electronic (CCTV) surveillance methodologies. Enforces rules in a firm, fair and consistent manner. Performs verbal and/or physical intervention (restraint) in situations to protect persons, maintain order and/or advance therapeutic results. Facilitates Emergency Custody Orders in full compliance with statutory regulations, as well as departmental and hospital policy. Provides escorts on request for staff and visitors to parking areas or other locations on campus. Provides vehicle jump-starts and assists with vehicle “lock outs”. Provides custody/transfer/storage of patient valuables/payments and found property. Issues receipts/discharge slips and completes reports in a timely and accurate manner. Assists in containing fire and/or relocating patients in event of fire alarm; meets and directs fire department personnel. Displays ability to make effective decisions based on the information available. Demonstrates observation skills that are necessary to protect Hospital property and personnel. Properly addresses hazardous and security issues per established policy and procedures. Communication Consults with, and keeps supervisor informed of, activities, needs and problems in assigned areas. Consistently uses tact and diplomacy for effective resolution of confrontational situations, which may include the need to intervene and/or detain unruly and/or dangerous persons on hospital premises. Maintains civil custody of emergency psychiatric patients deemed “imminently dangerous to self or others”. Communicates effectively via telephone, CCTV, Access Control, Two-Way radio etc., in an effective, courteous manner. Providing Customer Service Responds to anyone requesting help, direction or information; provides escort services to guests, visitors and staff. Performs vehicle assists, e.g. jump-starts and lockouts. Maintains the confidentiality of patient information, or of others involved. Assists supervisors and Preceptors in the orientation of new departmental personnel. Presents neat, well-groomed, professional appearance. Wears required uniform and equipment. Performs Other Duties as Required Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education etc.). Performs other duties as required.
