Description:
SENIOR AUTOMATION ENGINEER – LEVEL I SYSTEMS (MULTIPLE OPENINGS)
SMS group Inc. seeks a Senior Automation Engineer – Level I Systems (Multiple Openings) to work in Pittsburgh, PA, responsible for the design engineering and the commissioning, erection, and implementation of automation systems for cold rolling mill equipment and technology. Specific responsibilities include: (i) developing, deploying, and servicing Level-1 Automation systems based on user needs, software requirements, system specification and design; (ii) commissioning complete Level-1 systems delivered to manufacturing facilities, including process data analyses, systems trouble shooting, customer relations, system monitoring and tuning; (iii) collaborating with U.S. engineering and sales departments, SMS’ world-wide engineering teams, and customers and suppliers to provide engineering solutions on technical and project-related matters; (iv) training personnel on the use and management of automation systems as well as creating operator’s and systems maintenance manuals; (v) supporting development and implementation of PLC based automation control systems that include motion control, advanced sensors, VFD drives and actuators; (vi) servicing existing systems to ensure systems meet specified performance standards; (vii) creating technical documentation including engineering drawings, motor lists, functional descriptions, reports and user manuals; and (viii) designing and implementing automation control systems based on project requirements, SMS standards, and reference projects.
Must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a directly related field, plus two (2) years of experience in an automation engineering role for steelmaking control systems.
Two-year experience must include: developing electrical design and software solutions for motion control systems that perform closed loop control on electric and hydraulic actuators; defining and developing interface protocols to communicate included advanced sensors; defining Drive size requirements and interface to drive(s) to enable specific movements of a motor; selecting, sizing and controlling electrical equipment to enable integrated solutions for controlled movements; designing electrical engineering solutions with Programmable Logic Controllers as the main control platform; and developing software programs using ABB or Siemens Programmable Logic Controllers. Experience can be concurrent.
Must know (from any completed university-level coursework, seminars, workshops, or real-world, hands-on experience): IEEE standards; and Process knowledge of Melting, Casting, Rolling, or Process Lines for the Metals industry.
Must be able and willing to travel domestically up to 5% to various unanticipated client locations.
