Job Description
Leidos is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer for work at its Walled Lake, Michigan office. We are seeking qualified individuals with experience to excel in a high performance team responsible for the development and delivery of market leading controls services and solutions.
As a Automation Engineer, you will provide technical expertise and work as a part of a team with other engineers and consultants involved in the design and implementation of diverse and challenging solutions for industrial and commercial clients. The ideal candidate would be responsible for the entire lifecycle of a project. Your responsibilities will range from performing system requirements analysis, hardware design, PLC programming, integration, verification and commissioning of controls systems. The successful candidate will have controls experience, knowledge of industry standards and current technologies, outstanding communication skills and the ability to meet project requirements.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produce best in class, robust solutions for electrical / software applications in automation, material handling, robotics, logistics & general manufacturing.
  • Working with our Business Development team to professionally represent the company, gather data, and ask the right questions to define a project.
  • Attend client sites to discuss solutions and complete site surveys.
  • Identify & interpret customer requirements to understand their processes and develop the best solutions for their requirements.
  • Conduct technology research / analysis.
  • Support risk identification and mitigation.
  • Communicate with the customer and assess their want to produce an RFQ when there isn’t one available.
  • Produce technical proposals to the required level of detail as identified in the client tender/RFQ.
  • Develop value-added propositions and proposal writing.
  • Support estimating & supply chain activities with RFQ production.
  • Manage resources in the production of the proposal e.g., internal engineering and third-party engineering resources.
  • Assist and advise other members of the Applications team on solutions, stakeholder reviews, customer and supplier interaction.
  • Support development of the Applications department’s processes and discuss improvements where required, and implement improvements agreed with the leadership team.
  • Excellent understanding of industrial safety and its application when developing solutions.
  • Development and maintenance of Bills of Materials.
  • Develop “first pass” estimates to be reviewed and assessed by the relevant teams for accuracy.
  • Work as part of the Applications team & adapt as required to ensure workload is prioritized.
  • Respond to customer enquiries & requests promptly, professionally and effectively. This may require working to tight deadlines to meet customer driven timelines.
  • Manage and prioritize workload as required applying a measured approach according to urgency/importance.
  • Effectively present technical documentation and solutions to all other departments in line with requirements, & handle questions & feedback constructively & professionally.
  • Support the sales processes technically in presentations, meetings and other interactions with the customer.
  • Support the BD team technically during site visits, at exhibitions, open days and other events.
  • Achieve buy-in to proposed solution of all stakeholders both internal and external.
  • Assess and assimilate stakeholder feedback where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the overall business as required whether, or not the task is directly related to job role e.g., support design engineering if demand requires.
  • Follow Group and Company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Use all Company equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with Company procedures.
  • Report all health and safety issues and concerns to your line manager and/or a Health and Safety Representative in a timely and professional manner.
  • Familiarize oneself with, and adhere to, the Company’s Equality Policy at all times.
  • All employees must conduct themselves in accordance with our Corporate Company Values and Business Ethics at all times.
  • If home working flexibility will be required to attend Leidos sites within the UK or globally as required.
  • Visiting clients in the US and abroad as required during none- production hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Work overtime as necessary to achieve project goals/deadlines

Skills and Required Experience;

  • Highly Organized & self-motivated.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Excel
  • Sound understanding of MS Office packages.
  • Proficient in either SolidWorks / AutoCAD / Inventor
  • Team player.
  • Good technical literacy skills.
  • Adaptable & flexible.
  • Proven experience in Electrical / Software Engineering solutions for Mechanical / Mechanical Handling systems.
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Automation methods and processes.
  • Supplier base knowledge.
  • Understanding of project costs - design, management, manufacture, installation etc.
  • Knowledge of major automotive OEM standards – Ford GVOSS / Tesla / JLR / Stellantis
  • Knowledge of current industry Materials Handling systems best practice for automotive & general industry.
  • Knowledge of current Industry Automation controls best practice and techniques experience for automotive and general industry.

Required Education:
Degree in Electrical / Software Engineering or equivalent experience.
