Description:
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual, to fill a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist position. Applicants will need to be HCPC registered, qualified to MSc level in Biomedical Science, and have at least 3 years post specialist registration experience in microbiology. They will need to possess specialist diagnostic bacteriology and mycology knowledge and skills, including some experience of molecular diagnostics, automated technology and virology/serology assays. The successful applicant will also need to have experience of quality assurance systems including laboratory audit.
The successful applicant will need to be a team player with excellent communication, organisational, time management and interpersonal skills. The department provides good opportunities for CPD and ongoing education and training relevant to the job role will be actively supported.
Hours of contracted work will be 37.5 hrs full-time with attendance required Monday-Friday and contracted hours will also include covering our 8am-8pm extended working day and rostered Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Working patterns are under review and are subject to alteration in the future.
To act as the departmental Training Officer and manage the training and development of staff within the laboratory.
To be responsible for day-to-day section management of the bacteriology and virology/serology sections, together with other band 7 staff within the microbiology laboratory, under the direction of the Microbiology Service Manager.
To deputise for the virology/serology and molecular diagnostics band 7 section lead in their absence.
To contribute to providing a professional clinical, technical, laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.
To be responsible for the training, continual professional development, performance review and supervision of staff within the section.
To continue to develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills.
To play a role in the continuous development of the organisation as a member of the Microbiology management team, and as a potential member of a range of Trust quality/process improvement project groups.
The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Hospitals are the largest heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe. We are a partnership of two specialist hospitals which are known throughout the world for our expertise, standard of care and research success.
The Microbiology Laboratory Service for both the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals is part of Synnovis Analytics and is centralised service on the Royal Brompton site. The department is UKAS ISO15189 accredited. It is also approved by the HCPC/IBMS for training. It offers a wide range of specialist bacteriology, virology and fungal diagnostics including cystic fibrosis and transplant bacteriology, mycobacteriology identification and susceptibility testing, molecular PCR assays and serology assays.
You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.
Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings
To plan, prioritise and organise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis.
To provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff, including the processing of bacteriology/mycology and virology/serology patient
samples with specialist ability for interpretation of results and addition of supplementary investigations.
To be proactive in the updating and generation of standard operational procedures and policies.
To ensure the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff. To ensure that COSHH and Risk Assessments pertinent to the section are reviewed and updated.
To participate in, and ensure the facilitation of, Quality Assurance and Audit within the section.
To develop and improve basic and specialist scientific expertise which may be via CPD within an appraisal programme. To maintain a portfolio of relevant developments achieved.
To undertake suitable training and development programmes to successfully acquire core competencies and thereafter maintain the required standards of competence when undertaking duties.
To maintain registration with the health and care Professions Council (HCPC).
To be fully aware of the ACDP requirements for the handling of dangerous pathogens, and to apply this knowledge to safely handle these pathogens in a Containment Level 3 Laboratory.
As part of the Synnovis Analytics, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 February 2025 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests.
