Overview
Reporting to the Vice President, Risk and Insurance, the Senior Manager will be responsible for the intake, investigation, evaluation and resolution of liability and property claims and ensure loss control practice improvements are continuously identified and implemented at the properties. The Senior Manager will be required to manage claims in conjunction with Starlight’s third-party control adjuster and/or insurer to the approved resolution, with a keen focus on subrogation opportunities and third-party responsibility. A priority will be to ensure a reduction in the frequency and severity of claims and improved property performance thru the effective implementation of risk control practices at the properties. The Senior Manager will be responsible to maintain the internal claims management system in real-time and deliver management reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
The Senior Manager will be mentored as a component of succession planning by the Vice President, Risk & Insurance and Chief Legal Officer with respect to the insurance program including market presentations and key initiatives that reduce Starlight’s total cost of risk.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review all emergency and incident reports in real-time to determine Risk & Insurance’s role and an initial course of action.
  • Coordinate and consolidate the information necessary to make an informed decision on a further course of action.
  • Engage and manage Starlight personnel, third party property managers, adjusters, service providers and other stakeholders, providing direction as appropriate, and obtain all necessary information and documentation and effectively resolve claims.
  • Continuously monitor claims file status to ensure all internal and external follow-up actions are completed expeditiously. Prepare and review various agreements, forms and releases required for signature and draft claims correspondence.
  • Engage with external legal counsel.
  • Request regular and thorough updates from adjusters, insurers, and legal counsel.
  • Pursue third party subrogation claims where appropriate.
  • Ensure all claims’ related invoicing is requested and processed in a timely fashion through Starlight’s vendor portal.
  • Identify evolving and inherent operational risks and work to implement risk mitigation practices.
  • Identify system and process improvements for the review, evaluation, and administration of incidents at Starlight properties.
  • Review insurers quarterly loss reports to ensure reserves, billing and closed files are reflected accurately.
  • Attend insurer risk control inspections and assist in gathering information and responding to insurer recommendations.
  • Actively assist and identify opportunities to increase tenant insurance penetration at the properties.
  • Maintain an internal claims management system in real-time and deliver management reporting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

Requirements

  • University degree, college diploma or equivalent required.
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and/or Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of application legislation considered an asset, i.e., Insurance Act, Limitation Act, Occupiers Liability Act, Residential and Tenancy Act, Municipal Freedom of Information of Privacy and Protection Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
  • Minimum five years claims handling experience of commercial liability and property claims required.
