Senior Clinical Pharmacist – Neurosciences

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated & enthusiastic clinical pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, responsible for the delivery of a range of pharmacy services to the neurology, neurosurgery & adult metabolic services. This is an exciting opportunity in a pioneering hospital which is expanding & developing new areas in research, service development & education.
The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (NHNN) is the United Kingdom’s oldest & largest dedicated neurological & neurosurgical hospital. We are part of University College London Hospitals NHS foundation Trust (UCLH) & we are linked with the University College London (UCL) Institute of Neurology. The NHNN is a leading centre for the diagnosis, treatment & care of patients with a wide range of conditions such as epilepsy, MS, Alzheimer’s, stroke & head injuries.
The majority of the Neurology & Neurosurgery services are provided from within the NHNN. The hospital comprises 240 inpatient beds including a specialist neurology & neurosurgery ICU, two busy outpatient departments & a Day Care Centre. Additional inpatient beds within the UCH Tower support inpatients at the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We also provide a pharmacy service to the Charles Dent Metabolic Unit, a treatment centre for adolescents & adults with inherited metabolic diseases. We are one of the designated national lysosomal storage disease centres.
The pharmacy team is well integrated into clinical practice & works closely with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists & other ward staff in order to provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy support for inpatients & outpatients.
This post has been created to challenge current barriers of prescribing of new antiepileptic treatment in primary care.
We are looking for a proactive & dynamic individual with the requisite knowledge, skills, experience, & expertise to work with the QS Head of Pharmacy & the NHNN Epilepsy service to monitor the prescribing of anti-epileptic medication in line with NICE guidance & the NCL ICB shared care agreements.
On a daily basis, you will manage the day-to-day delivery of anti-epileptic treatments (AEDs) to outpatients seen at the QS Epilepsy Service to ensure safe, clinically effective & cost efficient use of drugs.
You will follow up declined shared care guidelines & liaise with the GP & the referring ICB. You will analyse dispensing data to identify referring ICBs not adhering to NCL shared care agreements & work closely with the UCLH & NCL formulary team to systematically challenge referring ICBs on their decision. You will provide monthly reports to the Queen Square division & the Epilepsy team at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery.
You will also work as part of our broader clinical pharmacy team, & contribute to local & national initiatives to develop & enhance the pharmacy service & medicines management across the Trust.
