Description:

STV is looking for a Senior Construction Inspector in our Austin, TX field locations that will oversee a range of construction projects including but not limited to, roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures.
Senior Construction Inspector:
Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a TxDOT district or conduct construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Trains others. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests at job sites and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:

Construction Inspector:

  • Ensures prompt notification and/or repair of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public or more costly to repair if neglected.
  • Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors’ superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Oversees construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; recommends change orders, extra work orders/supplemental agreements; reviews proposed change orders submitted by consultants; prepares reports.
  • Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and practices in accordance to STV and TxDOT safety standards.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Construction Inspector: 12 years in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience. TxDOT Experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems.
  • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities.
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps.
  • Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry.
  • Interpreting applicable information.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Move up to 50 pounds.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing, walking, standing and crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8am to 5pm.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Required to work in the field or job site location.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
  • Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work within 1 hour for emergency situations, such as inclement weather events.

Compensation Range:
$96,867.00 - $129,156.00
