This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a proven track record in applying their professional expertise in energy and decarbonisation with economic and financial analysis skills to join the relatively new but rapidly growing Australian practice of a large and established global firm. The person we recruit will have the opportunity to shape and define the areas they will work in and who they will work with, while having the support of a large international network of experts and colleagues behind them. We regularly form project teams from across our global network and you will have opportunities to work on international issues and overseas.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for highly motivated and passionate professionals with:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Commerce or Economics are required. An MSc/MA or Ph.D. are desirable. Other qualifications will be considered.
  • 3 to 6+ years of experience in consulting firms, international organisations, governments, think tanks, or academia. Ideally with field experience in developing countries.
  • Relevant experience in the focus areas described above.
  • Deep understanding of the energy markets and decarbonisation challenges.
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis to support decision-making and effectively communicating your findings to a broad spectrum of people.
  • Strong quantitative skills, including excellent Excel proficiency, as well as coding to carry out econometric analysis (Python, R, or Stata).
  • Proficiency in geospatial analytics, including extracting and manipulating geospatial data to support data-driven approach. Knowledge of QGIS/ArcGIS required. Integration with Python/R desirable.
  • Knowledge of non-market valuation methods, including stated and revealed preference methods.
  • Commercial acumen and technical knowledge.
  • Experience working within a team to develop and deliver innovative solutions to complex problems.

ABOUT THE ROLE

FTI Consulting is home to one of the world’s leading independent economic and financial consulting practices, helping clients understand today’s economic, financial and regulatory opportunities and challenges. We are seeking a talented Senior Consultant or Director to join our Economics and Financial Consulting team. The selected applicant will be an integral part of this fast-growing practice, working with team members locally, nationally and internationally.
The selected Senior Consultant/Director will work across the segments of the Economic and Financial Consulting team, with a focus on Energy & Decarbonization. Our team, which includes economists, engineers, government and regulatory specialists, commercial and strategy advisors and specialist modellers regularly work with businesses, investors, governments, regulators and market institutions to find unique and bespoke solutions to meet our client’s needs.
A successful applicant is capable of tackling novel and intricate economic challenges with precision and expertise. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to undertake in-depth data analysis, analyse complex economic issues, apply advanced quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and deliver high-quality outcomes. In addition, the selected applicant will transfer specialist knowledge and be entrusted with coaching junior colleagues while overseeing key project components. The selected candidate will also begin to develop and build valuable client relationships.

Specific areas of focus include:

  • Energy transition – providing clients across the energy industry with strategic and commercial advice in relation to business cases, strategies and transaction processes across the sector.
  • Decarbonization & climate change – advising clients on measuring and quantifying complex issues around carbon emissions accounting, target setting, carbon reduction planning, quantification of climate risks, carbon pricing and carbon markets.
  • Modelling – Develop models to solve clients’ needs. This might include economic and financial models, econometrics, and geospatial analysis.
  • Policy advisory - Assist governments with the design of energy and climate policies internationally, in Australia and overseas, with a focus on developing countries.

  • Undertake economic research and analysis to inform our clients’ decisions – including economic, financial, econometric, and geospatial modelling.
  • Support and contribute towards the production of reports, presentations and other client deliverables.
  • Assist with business development, preparing proposals and bids.
