The Opportunity
The Law branch at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is undergoing exciting changes! We are the AER’s trusted in-house legal department, committed to providing exceptional legal and strategic advice and litigation services to support all aspects of the AER’s core business, strategic priorities, and the achievement of the AER’s mandate. As we continue to expand and develop internally, we’re delighted to announce new openings within our team. One of these opportunities is for a Senior Counsel, Law and Special Advisor that will play a pivotal role supporting the Law Leadership Team (LLT) in a variety of ways, including proactively identifying emerging and strategic critical legal issues and recommending innovative strategies and responses, delivering special projects, supporting policy development and implementation, and overseeing the creation and delivery of legal knowledge and training to staff across the enterprise. You will also lead critical, complex, high risk, and high-profile legal matters ensuring strategic legal advice and support across various aspects of our business operations.
As the Senior Counsel, Law and Special Advisor, reporting to the VP Law and Associate General Counsel (AGC), you thrive on supporting knowledge transfer through informal coaching and mentoring and would like to support the development of legal counsel at all years of call. You will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including senior management, to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations while also mitigating legal risks. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic, progressing, and collaborative environment, where you’ll have the chance to make a meaningful impact and contribute to energy regulation in Alberta.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Advise and support the LLT to ensure the Law branch achieves its mandate and its strategic and operational goals.
  • Lead, manage, and execute special projects as directed by the Executive VP and General Counsel and VP Law and AGC. Proactively identify critical legal issues for the AER, collaborate with senior leadership to devise strategies, and address high-risk legal problems.
  • Prepare Law branch reports, support policy development and implementation, including the administration of the Conflict of Interest and Whistleblower policies.
  • Manage high-risk legal matters, effective lead high performing legal teams on file matters, and maintain collaborative relationships across the enterprise.
  • Serve as a delegated statutory decision maker for regulatory matters and proceedings.
  • Provide expert advice to senior management on critical legal matters.

    What we’re looking for in you:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta.

  • 15+ years of relevant experience, including at least 10 years as legal counsel to a regulatory body in Canada, in-house counsel, or appearing before the Alberta Energy Regulator or another Canadian energy regulatory agency. Training or certification in the areas of regulatory law, leadership development, risk assessment, or project management is an asset.
  • A strong critical thinker who can effectively communicate (written and verbally) regulatory and legal solutions to complex problems with ease, providing the supporting logic and complex analysis.
  • Track record of coaching and mentoring lawyers at all levels of experience.
  • An agile, collaborative and team focused approach.

Additional Requirements:

  • SEC2 - This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check and a financial security check.
  • Minimal travel within Alberta required (for hearings, ADR etc.).
  • This role has a business requirement to work from Calgary.
