Senior Physiotherapist
Band 6 – Surgery & Critical Care (Static) 1 year fixed term contract to cover a secondment.
37.5 Hours per week
We are seeking a well-motivated and forward thinking Physiotherapist to work within the Surgical & Critical Care team as part of the wider Inpatient Physiotherapy Department.
Under the guidance of the Band 7 Team Lead & clinical specialist, you will have the opportunity to develop both clinically and managerially within a friendly and supportive environment where excellence is encouraged.

The acute surgical wards & 8-bedded Surgical Acute Dependency unit on the main site are part of the Surgical directorate and there is an emphasis on early mobilisation, post-operative respiratory care & advice& discharge planning . Strong links with the specialist teams (such as Colorectal & Vascular) and effective multi-disciplinary working help to facilitate early decision making and effective therapy interventions. The team provides a specialist physiotherapy service (both in & out-patients) to patients having undergone lower limb amputation.
The 14-bedded critical care unit & the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit are part of the Anaesthetic directorate. There is a very strong rehabilitation ethos within the unit & the physiotherapy team are integral to this.
As a senior clinician you will be involved in the supervision, education and appraisal of physiotherapists, support staff and students and you will have the opportunity to lead and be involved in appropriate service development. CPD opportunities to develop these skills will be available as part of your appraisal process.
The post holder will be required to work their hours over a seven day pattern, working 1 in 4 weekends and participate in the evening on call rota (Monday to Friday nights only).

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF JOB:

To provide a high standard physiotherapy service in assessing and treating patients who may have a complex presentation.
To supervise and teach recently qualified physiotherapists/technicians/assistants and students and be involved in teaching MDT staff.
To participate in CPD and other departmental activities.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical
To be responsible for implementing within your clinical practice, the relevant standards and policies.
To propose and make changes to working practices in consultation with the speciality lead where applicable.
To maintain a high standard of clinical care using evidence based practices and evaluate the outcomes.
To be responsible as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant clinical caseload on the Surgical wards, take an active clinical role on the Critical Care and to cover for leave on other surgical areas as required
To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients including those with complex presentation using investigative and analytical skills. To seek guidance from senior staff as required.
To devise an individualised physiotherapy management and/or treatment plan, using clinical reasoning skills to utilise a range of treatment options in formulating a specialised programme of care.
To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your professional activities working within codes of practice and professional guidelines. This includes patient documentation in both professional and medical notes and monthly statistical work sheets.
To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance, clinical risk and to demonstrate the use of treatment plans with an evidence based link.
To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions, including highly developed manual physiotherapy techniques and therapeutic handling. There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for short periods during the day.
To keep up to date with clinical developments and maintain background knowledge in this speciality area analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes in clinical practice.
To ensure that junior members of the team are informed of developments and changes and work to these standards.
To ensure that as an individual practitioner, the post holder advises the Team leader and Physiotherapy Head of Service of any changes to the service to ensure quality and effectiveness of care for their patients.
To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, adhering to the department’s medical devices policy. This includes competence and accuracy to use equipment by yourself and other healthcare professionals, carers and patients.
To participate in the on call and weekend rotas
