Description:

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Within the Collider-Accelerator Department, the Accelerator Division Cryogenic Engineering Group has an opening for a senior lead-level cryogenic engineer with experience in the analysis, design, and operation of helium liquefaction and refrigeration systems and equipment for cooling superconducting devices. Work scope will include upgrades and maintenance of current RHIC cryogenic equipment as well as the design and planning for future EIC cryogenic systems and equipment. The role also involves participating in the daily operations of the RHIC cryogenic plant through maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of deployed equipment.
This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing individual engineering projects and developing project plans including schedules, needed resources, and budgets.
  • Work independently and collaborate with other senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support.
  • Do overall system level engineering, define equipment requirements, prepare equipment purchase specifications and drawing packages, following lab safety standards and national safety and equipment codes.
  • Oversight of less experienced engineers during the engineering and design of cryogenic components, and develop designs of cryogenic components inside cryostats, of vacuum jacketed cryogenic piping system and warm piping systems between equipment and piping supports.
  • Collaborate with technical staff on the mechanical interfaces and cryogenic requirements during the design of Superconducting RF cavity and superconducting magnet cryomodules.
  • Develop purchase specifications, interface and follow up with vendor/fabricator during vendor manufacturing, travel for design meetings and witness tests.
  • Present the engineering and design in design reviews with technical staff.
  • Coordination of a variety of technical staff for fabrication, assembly, testing and installation of equipment in the C-AD shops and facilities.
  • Manage or supervise the creation and implementation of work planning procedures, hazard analyses, safety reviews, and supervise technicians during assembly, installation, and commissioning of equipment.
  • Individual may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission critical projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of full time progressively responsible experience in the engineering and or operations of cryogenic system, helium plant or other plant process equipment and component systems.
  • Experience with plant/system process simulation and use of cryogenic thermodynamic and transport properties database such as HePak, Gaspak, Refprop, Aspen HYSYS or other plant process simulation software.
  • Experience with creating and reviewing detailed piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and process flow diagrams (PFDs) for cryogenic plant systems.
  • Experience with practical finite element analysis using ANSYS Workbench.
  • Clear and concise written and oral skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office and MS Excel.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • An MS degree or higher in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, with a specialization in cryogenic engineering.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible related work experience which demonstrates advanced capabilities and use of sophisticated engineering approaches.
  • Process experience in cryogenic plants or with other refrigeration cycles is greatly desired.
  • Ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPVC VIII and ASME B31.3 Piping Code, and CGA standards.
  • Familiarity with NFPA and OSHA requirements.
  • Familiarity with ASME/ASCE standards, building codes, NFPA and OSHA requirements.
  • Project development and management skills, proficient with MS Project.
  • Professional Engineering license.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Individual may be required to climb ladders and/or work in Confined Spaces.
  • Individual may be required to work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area.
  • Individual may be required to work in High Noise environment.
  • Individual may be required to work in Static Magnetic fields area greater than 5 Gauss.
  • Individual will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in Radiation areas.

Other Information:

  • This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework) at the discretion of the manager/dept chair.
  • Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Individual may be required to travel to attend vendor meetings, project reviews, and conferences, and training.

Compensation:
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $111450 - $155850 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.
