JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Cyberinfrastructure Engineer (CIE) plays a pivotal role in advancing the growth of research computing at Syracuse University. The CIE will actively engage with researchers to comprehend their evolving needs, offering expert recommendations on available computing resources. This role demands a profound understanding of Syracuse University’s research computing landscape, encompassing High Throughput Computing, High Performance Computing, virtualization, and various operating systems. Proficiency in scripting tools such as Perl, Python, or TCL is essential. The Senior CIE will be a key contributor to the strategic growth of research computing at Syracuse University, playing a crucial role in fostering collaboration, optimizing resources, and enhancing the overall research experience for the diverse academic community. The Senior CIE will also provide technical leadership and daily operational guidance to the other members of the research computing group within ITS.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Substantial experience in research computing with a focus on collaborative resource identification, systems development, and community-building.
  • Five or more years of directly relevant work experience required.
  • Expertise in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math a plus.

JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency in scripting languages (Perl, Python, or TCL), strategic research tool development, and a proven ability to interact effectively with national research computing organizations.

Responsibilities:

Collaborative Resource Identification:

  • Collaborative Resource Identification: Collaborate with researchers to understand their needs, identify resources, and facilitate the application of resources to meet specific research requirements. Maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of available research computing resources at Syracuse University. Leverage experience and advanced concepts, practices, and procedures to impart valuable insights and contribute to the achievement of objectives with Research Computing team and university researchers. Play a lead role is overseeing other members of the research computing group as they work with the community on technology solutions and support needs.

Systems and Services Development:

  • Design, develop, build, and administer systems and services tailored to support researchers in their computing needs.

Strategic Tool Proficiency:

  • Develop expertise in strategic research tools and applications to optimize resource utilization and enhance research output.

Community Building and Problem Identification:

  • Act as an aggregation point to identify common research needs, challenges, and resources within the diverse Syracuse University research community.
  • Foster a sense of community and identify tools that can address challenges across multiple disciplines.
  • Collaborate with national research computing organizations to stay informed about available tools, resources, innovative approaches, and best practices.

Documentation and Resources Development:

  • Develop comprehensive documentation and resources to assist researchers in understanding and utilizing available research computing resources effectively.

Campus-wide Presentation:

  • Present research computing opportunities in various campus forums, including faculty meetings, departmental gatherings, and other appropriate venues.
