Role Title: Senior Data Engineer
Reporting to: Head of Data & Analytics
Division: TPS (Technology & Product Studio)
Purpose:
Each month over 10 million people read the content of MediaHuis Ireland publications including the Irish Independent, Belfast Telegraph and Sunday World - they are informed and entertained - generating hundreds of millions of pageviews in the process. On the core data team at Mediahuis Ireland our mission is to support the products, platforms and business functions by delivering the best data foundations. In the collaborative environment that is Mediahuis Ireland the senior data engineer will work cross functionally with product teams, marketing teams and audience teams. This is a unique opportunity to work in the fastest growing subscription business in Ireland.
Outputs of this role will shape the direction of Mediahuis Ireland by improving our understanding of our customer, creating data flows from our source data platforms. This insight will then be used to assist the business in optimising pricing, subscriptions, bundling and advertising yields. It will highight new eCommerce opportunities and inform digital product development and publishing strategy.
Role Responsibilities:

General

• Your focus will be in the early stages of the data lifecycle. You are responsible for the efficient capturing of data from source data and integration of that data into core data sets. You will translate business understanding and ideation to ETL architecture and analytics.
• You will turn raw disparate data into defined reuseable data products for data savvy end users.
• You are the lead data engineer for capturing new and existing data sources and integrating into Big Query and Azure.
• You play a key role in converting various data sources into interrogatable datasets, metrics and insights across all areas of the business.
• Work with various APIs to bring clean, timely data into our core platforms of Big Query and Azure.
• Help to understand and contextualize the performance of the Mediahuis Ireland online business (web, mobile and app).
• Work with your team colleagues to develop actionable insights to drive customer subscriptions, engagement, monetization and loyalty.
• Identify the data needed to solve a business problem and implement logging required to ensure availability of data, while working with data infrastructure to triage issues and resolve.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers and data scientists to understand data needs, representing key data insights visually in a meaningful way.
• You are an agile, dynamic, outcomes focused team member with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Be the engineering lead on large scale data migration projects
• Be the administrative gatekeeper of data coming from our main digital platforms
• Ensure efficient storage of our data
• Champion efficient and compliant use of data
• Understand and champion good data architecture

Collaboration & Stakeholder management

• Support head of data and analytics in the production of sensible data flow plans
• Leverage data to inform colleagues in publishing, content, advertising sales and marketing strategies and recommend changes as appropriate.
• Assist the team in gathering business requirements from stakeholders- especially non-technical stakeholders

Experience and Qualifications

• Relevant BSC or MSC in relevant area.
• 3+ years’ experience in a data team.
• Strong data engineering and analytical background

Skills

• Skilled in SQL & Python
• Skilled with API work
• Data storage patterns & schemas
• Web analytics – has worked with web and app data
• Great stakeholder management – You will work across multiple teams, understanding how data and reports will be used by different teams, taking the time to understand the challenges and needs of each team.
• Collaborates: Is a team player -works with others across the organisation to get things done.
• Excellent presentation and communication skills. You are comfortable explaining technical topics to non-technical users.
• Knowledge of Google cloud platform, google analytics, big query, data studio would be beneficial
• Knowledge of JavaScript is beneficial
