The Data Governance (DG) team is responsible for setting the strategy, policy, and direction of effective Data Governance across Canada. The Specialist works closely with the Data Governance Officer (DGO) on local DG activities and supports Canada’s DG team in implementing and carrying out effective procedures and processes across the organization, including embedding DG into projects and BAU initiatives involving data.
We are seeking an upbeat and experienced Senior Data Governance Specialist who will be accountable for the day-to-day operations of the DG Office, including prioritization of deliverables, communications, and reporting.

What you’ll do:
- Drive and support the DGO in implementing the Data Governance strategy, policy, standards and adoption of DG processes and value
- Contribute to the execution of the Data Risk and Control Framework
- Supervise adherence to enterprise Data Governance framework and Data Governance policies and standards
- Identify exceptions to policies/standards and raise exceptions to the DGO and Data Council
- Manage processes aligned with the Information Asset Register, Critical Data Register, Highly Critical data mapping, and yearly attestations of the Accountable Executive, DGO and Data Owners
- Conduct insightful Data Impact Assessments, working closely with the business for new initiatives and present in Data Council meetings
- Support Workgroups and lead data projects Data, where assigned to embed DG standards
- Support the tracking of Data Issues in the Data Issues and Activities Log
- Maintain and handle the enterprise data catalogue, data lineage and metadata management tools within the organization’s big data environment
- Maintain and work within data governance technologies and the use of data to support data governance monitoring in a big data environment with particular focus on Manager Business Glossary, Data Blueprints Portal, Confluence and Data Council sites
- Contribute to the development of global DG training programs, and where applicable, develop and lead presentation of educational DG programs across Canada
- Contribute to Records and Information Management Projects
- Support Third Party Data Risk Management Processes
The Specialist supports the delivery of Global DG requirements through:
- Drive compliance with the Global Data Governance Standard
- Collaborate with Global Data Governance, Data Owners and Data Council to improve maturity
- Identify and record improvement plans to increase DG maturity across the business, oversight to ensure artifacts and/or processes are embedded and auditable
- Support the DGO and monitor business remediation dealing with DG risk, control and governance arrangements
- Create and publish Canada’s monthly DG reports to the Global DG team
- Maintain data transfer register and coordinated third-party data risk management
What you’ll bring:
- Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 5 years in Data Governance and data controls
- Sophisticated experience using Data Governance Platforms for Metadata and Data Quality Management
- Advanced expertise in compliance and data risk management
- Advanced knowledge in partner management and championing data governance to partners
- Ability to work effectively and build positive relationships with teams throughout the organization
- High level of initiative and setting and achieving challenging goals
- Ability to positively influence the commitment and results of resources not under direct control
- Proven experience in defining and implementing policies procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Insurance (Property and Casualty) experience, an asset
