A Senior Data Scientist is responsible for helping the Analytics Team Lead develop the project plan and execute on project tasks. A Senior Data Scientist has the following roles and responsibilities:

Consultant: Provide expertise, knowledge, and insight to help the business improve their performance and grow by solving problems and finding new and better ways of doing things. Serve as a catalyst for change.

  • Own development of requirements, development of project artifacts and overall plans for specific project efforts
  • Lead meetings with key stakeholders and keeps them up-to-date with project progress
  • Support Team Lead in development of SOW, project communications and presentation materials
  • Identify potential risks or gaps in implementation strategies
  • Interpret root problem that stakeholder is trying to solve and recommends best course of action
  • Support activities to develop new project opportunities

Analyst: Understands business needs and provides relevant information and insight to support functional objectives. Analyzes variables to identify trends, opportunities, issues and risks, and/or probable solutions to problems/situations for specific business areas.

  • Execute, or lead execution, of defined solution
  • Own process of validating analysis and ensuring results support excepted solution
  • Recommend and support use of statistically sound processes and procedures
  • Assess results from various angles and considers alternate interpretations

Operator: Executes on a plan of action within the expected timeframe and delivers expected results. Demonstrates commitment, responsiveness, and competence to the business and team.

  • Support Team Lead in development of the project plan
  • Take ownership in the identification and execution of tasks required by the project plan
  • Support Team Lead in creation of project deliverables
  • Committed to setting and meeting deadlines for project and those involved on the projects; drive towards completion during stated timeframe
  • Clearly communicate intent and results to both the team and the business
  • Effectively develop visualizations that support roll-out of technical solutions
  • Provide realistic timelines for project completion and communicates risks to those timelines to lead and stakeholders
  • Provide suggestions around data-related process improvement. Examples include data pipeline management, ideas for improvements to the data lake, consistency in coding standards
  • Active participant in Project Management

Technical Expert: Maintains up-to-date knowledge in area of expertise through proactive research and continuing education so as to achieve functional objectives.

  • Advanced coding skillset in R &/or Python
  • Ability to read in text files or csv, as well as sourcing data directly from relational databases
  • Proficient with SQL query development
  • Implement business rules, create analytical models, modify existing models, produce summary stats on data
  • Demonstrate ability to execute API calls
  • Take ownership over feature engineering & handling null values
  • High level of comfort in utilizing supervised and unsupervised learning techniques
  • Demonstrate abilities to scrape or access unstructured data
  • Ability to tell stories through visualizations
  • Own/Drive modeling process and life cycle
  • Challenge methods and model types used; assess strongest result given business need
  • Develop plan for moving created solution to production
  • Take ownership of work product and personal development

Mentor: Acts as a leader within the department by directing activities, promote successes, improve upon failures, and build competency through-out the department. Develops team members to build upon strengths and decrease weaknesses in individual performance, and maintaining positive team dynamics.

  • Assist in building unity across team
