The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Drug and Alcohol Service offers free, non-judgmental services and treatments for drug and/or alcohol use, including information and support for families. Our service offers specialist drug and alcohol doctors, nurses and allied health staff who respect the client’s right to choose from a range of treatments offered with our services underpinned by a philosophy of harm reduction.
An exciting opportunity has been made available for an experienced Social Worker to join the Forensic Drug & Alcohol Team. This is a temporary Full Time assignment until June 2026.
The primary purpose of the role is to support the Team Leader of the Forensic Drug & Alcohol Service to provide front line senior clinical and operational leadership, and the continued development of the NBMLHD Forensic Drug & Alcohol Team. The NBMLHD Forensic Drug & Alcohol Team facilitates the Magistrates Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) and Drug Court programs within the Local Health District.
The Senior Social Worker will provide evidence-based drug and alcohol assessment, case management and counselling services to patients accessing the MERIT and Drug Court programs via the Nepean Blue Mountains LHD Drug and Alcohol Service and support Forensic Drug and Alcohol staff with supervision for their service provision.

Responsibilities:

  • Tertiary qualifications, professional registration/membership and clinical experience as follows: Social Work – minimum Bachelor’s Degree and eligibility for membership of AASW.
  • Demonstrated extensive clinical experience managing complex client groups and circumstances of a complex nature requiring advanced practice skills and the provision of evidence-based interventions for alcohol and other drug using clients.
  • Demonstrated partnership building and negotiation skills with a wide range of service providers and a well-developed understanding of the interface between services, with a particular focus on the Criminal Justice System.
  • Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills with proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal direct clinical supervision. In addition, demonstrated capacity to act as an independent consultant in the specialty area of social work in addiction.
  • Evidence of an advanced level of verbal/written communication skills, analytical and interpersonal skills and the ability to apply these skills to contribute to the Forensic Drug & Alcohol Team ongoing evaluation, monitoring and enhancement of service delivery. This includes the preparation of high quality written and oral clinical and operational reports.
  • High level of computer literacy and ability to use a range of software programs for the purpose of record keeping, data collection, and working from mobile locations using Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience in, or commitment to, working with individuals and families from Indigenous backgrounds and/or diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Current driver’s license (NSW eligibility) and the willingness to travel for work purposes
